Search Engines

  • OneSearch: No cookies, no saving of search terms, search terms are encrypted, probably the most privacy focused search engine. From Yahoo! so uses Bing/Yahoo which censors less than Google. Almost all search engines scrape from Google so this is a good alternative.
  • Metager: A meta (information that describes information) search engine run by a non-profit and clean energy (if there is such a thing). Somewhere in between DuckDuckGo and Bing. Good privacy and great interface easy to read without eye candy or distraction.
  • Ecosia: They plant trees but again like DuckDuckGo the results are too similar to Google to be useful past garbage mainstream results. Great idea but wondering if it will improve since they state 80% of profits go to planting trees. Awesome. So, how do they improve and get independence from Google if the majority of your capital goes to planting trees? Privacy focused.
  • DuckDuckGo: The most popular privacy focused search engine. The results are very similar too Google. As censored so better too use OneSearch or Metager. Here because it is better than using Google directly.
  • Dogpile: Searches a slew of search engines and then aggregates them. Was more popular in the early 2000s but is fading. A great tool.
  • Wolfram Alpha: although not a traditional search engine it can be used as one. Heavily relies on AI (which has no judgement or discernment) and mainstream disinformation as a warning. Past that it presents a lot of information for a query. In the least it is fun.

Operating Systems

  • Slackware: the oldest Linux distribution still maintained and developed. If you want to learn GNU/Linux then learn Slackware.
  • Devuan: a Debian fork when Debian switched too systemd. Like Slackware both are systemd free.
  • openSUSE: originally based off Slackware and popular in Europe and especially Germany. systemd unfortunately but Leap is a very polished and professional distro suitable for those used too commercial junk operating systems and without a lot of technical knowledge. Makes a great desktop.

Software

  • GNU: the project started by Richard Stallman who created the GNU Public License (GPL) and the philosophical basis for free software, which is software that is free to use and free to modify. The internet runs on free or open source software. Android is under the GPL and uses GNU/Linux as a base.
  • LibreOffice: The best office suite in the world and completely free to use and download. Also good for converting Micro$oft Office files to open file formats.
  • GIMP: Photoshop replacement. Used by major Hollywood production studios and many professionals.
  • Kdenlive: Video editing software. About on par with other professional and very expensive video editing software. Except this is free to use, download, and modify.
  • qBittorrent: Replacement for uTorrent and works far better. Can search for torrents in the program itself.
  • Calibre: A great e-book editor, viewer, catalogue, etc suite. Can use to manage e-book readers and libraries, download news formatted in e-book formats (.mobi, .az3, .epub, etc). In other words an all in one e-book program.
  • Vim: one of the most capable and efficient text editors out there. It has a learning curve but the time invested is worth it as it will improve your productivity and save time in the long run. Venerable, and the most used text editor in the *nix world.
  • Thunderbird: an Outlook replacement, the latest releases have really improved it. The easiest way to check email vs web browsers.
  • Pale Moon: a pre-Firefox Aurora fork without the recent Firefox nonsense. If you like old Netscape and Firefox this keeps it alive. Also faster than most web browsers out there and theming is easy. Not the selection of add-ons Chrome and Firefox have which is a good thing. Less things to compromise or slow down the web browser. The interface is very customizable like the Mozilla of old.
